Avoid The Board Break Buzz Kill: Stay In The Water On Your Surf Vacation | Live Swell

Thursday morning Mission Beach California, mid-size swells, clean conditions….Took a few slides the night before and got in real early the following morning. Sometimes you wish you did not take the dawn patrol, kind of like this one: The unexpected shortening of the morning session or worse the possible premature ending of a surf vacation. Cruising down a clean face of a shoulder high peeler, lip is about to throw over, you duck in, get crunched, pop up from the wash and see now that you have two boards instead of one. Buzz Kill. I sure was not expecting that.

Clearly, this is even more important on a surfing vacation then being at home. I was able to go back to my car and pull out my 6’10” super fish to round out the session. On a surf vacation it makes sense, depending on how much you like your own gear, to pack an extra piece of equipment. It unlikely to snap one, however it does happen especially if you are pushing yourself in higher level surf breaks on your surf trip, but it really unlikely to snap two, so you are hedging our bets.

Also consider renting a beach house that is close enough to a surf town that may rent or have gear to repair boards, keeping you in the water longer is the point.

In the end, dings on your board (or snaps) fortunately, means that you are getting in the water and pushing yourself to get better, no better place or time to elevate your surf experience than on a surfing vacation.
