Kind of tweaked from a long cold flight from Toronto to San Diego early Monday morning, I find myself moving into my latest shag pad in Crown Point, a low-key area right next to Mission Bay in the Pacific Beach San Diego this week…Sunday night happened to be full of a few to many Havana and coke’s and turned out to be sleepless to add to the comfort of a Delta coach seat and the agony of moving + lifting boxes….anyway I added about 5k miles to my sky miles account and escaped the never-ending north east winter…By the way the brutal 2013-2014 was responsible for some epic cold water surf all up and down the eastern seaboard and Carribean this year…which made for some non-traditional surf vacations, like my good friend, Mike aka El Capitan who weathered the winter to get waves at the Montauk Lighthouse….He sent me a video from Montauk of his brother-in-law, Chris Grodski’s, cursing down a cold cool right, click this link Montauk Surf Vacation Right.

So that is not the point, but clearly important. I rolled up to Del Mar yesterday and parked where I normally do on 7th st. Surf was looking good from far but happened to be the opposite. One of the early SSW swell is creeping up on the coast and just caught some bad luck at Del Mar, surf had to be going off somewhere. When it’s on (and the surf break usually is) Del Mar reefs are epic, clean waves groomed by the kelp beds offshore. It works best when it is in the head high plus range and offers up some long rights and lefts. The surf vacation rentals in this area are stunning, Del Mar boast one of the high income in the country, and sits up on beautiful cliffs.

The photo above was taken of me walking down the Del Mar tracks a few years back. I got that egg board shaped when I was living on the North Shore of Oahu and it tore some of that wave action up down below.
