Your Next Surf Trip: Encinitas, CA, a West Coast Mecca

Encinitas, California, a West Coast mecca, is a small surf town about 20 miles north of the City of San Diego. If you surf, you probably already know this; Encinitas is just one of those places that surfers really want to visit. Just picture that classic surf town culture where almost every garage sits choked with boards, the local eateries name their top items after nearby waves, and the people there just act and look the part. Oh and let’s not forget, that pretty excellent, if not just fun for a goof, surf can be ridden here just about any day of the year. If you, like us, have a curious adventurer soul thats loves a surf destination that knows the true meaning of surf culture your desire to want to get to Encinitas will get you there.

Encinitas Surf – Some of our favorite Spots

When you do arrive you walk through this kitschy town that is the perfect blend of modern California and something out of a Gidget rerun. It’s as if 1965 slammed into 2014 right there in the middle of Highway 101 between Juanita’s Taco Shop and the edge of Cardiff.

As if the surf town itself wasn’t enticing enough, the beach is one of a handful of meccas for surfers. At the end of “D” Street is the access point to the stretch of beach also known as Boneyards.

The wave a Boneyards can get really fun.  Like this right hander.

Parking is free along the residential streets, but you might need to be willing to walk a few blocks if the surf is up and all the residents are home. There is a well-constructed set of stairs that make the walk down and back up the hillside manageable. The beach is laden with stones, but after you’ve laid your beach blanket out or paddled out you won’t remember.

Swami’s is a popular break at the southern end of Encinitas who’s entrance is located behind the Self-Realization Meditation Gardens ashram built on top of the cliff in 1937. During the summer, Swami’s area is an excellent place for longboarders, beginners learning to surf, and families. When the swell is larger in the winter, Swami’s gets world class right handers off point breaks, at this time other spots may be more welcoming. Swami’s can get seriously crowded, so be patient and courteous. Parking is free in the lot at the access point as well as in several other lots and on the surrounding streets.
